Test lumber or porous building materials – drywall, carpet, brick, concrete and plaster. CHECK LUMBER AND HARDWOOD BEFORE BUILDING AND WOODWORKING – Use the pins to know the moisture content of your wood to make sure you’re not using damp, moist wood on your projects to avoid cracks, splits, warping. Ensure wood flooring has acclimated before installing. PERFECT FOR HOME INSPECTIONS – Use the pad for quick non-invasive pinless scanning to find locations with higher than average moisture behind a wall or under a floor. CAUTION: Powerful pinless pad sensor measures to ¾” but can be influenced by materials up to 2 inches below subject material (e.g., metal screws, nails, workbench supports, etc.) Keep fingers clear of pad scanning area. Use pad to detect variations from normal and use pins to quantify it. ESTIMATE MOISTURE CONTENT QUICKLY AND EASILY – detector offers ideal dual functions of pin and pinless sensors in one. Use the pinless pad as a quick “ranging” feature to scan a large area for suspect areas without leaving holes. Then, switch to pins to quantify moisture level at various depths.

Both pin and pad modes work consistently
I’ve used this on a variety of materials in the various modes and I’ve gotten consistent and reasonable values each time. Certainly not the cheapest unit, but I’m willing to spend a bit more on a decent product. I’ve tried it on sheet goods, construction lumber, firewood, hardwoods, and the like. I used the right mode for each type of material. When using the pin mode I didn’t jam it in, but used enough pressure to make good contact, each time aligning the pins with the grain. I even used the pad mode on some older furniture indoors and got what I would have expected. Wood i’ve had in my shop for some time also got good results. If you are looking for a moderately priced unit that works reliably, this just might be it.

Pinless mode surface-sensitive and reproducible for log-ends if held flat
For hardwoods, I haven't had much luck inserting the pins into my firewood (the pins bend) so I use the pinless mode. By hovering the meter over my (other) palm, the sensing pad just beings to read above zero at around half an inch separation, increasing to 100% when in contact with my (other) palm. For split firewood, I can get very reproducible readings if the sensing pad is flat, in direct contact with the log end (which requires the log end to be flat), and if I place the pad in roughly the same location on the end. To hold the meter flat to the wood surface, I grip astride the display rather than by the red bumpers, so most of the time I listen for the rate of the chirps. The readings are plausible based on how easily the logs burn, with the caveat that the wood needs to be seasoned enough that the moisture content within half an inch or so of the flat surface that the pad is measuring is representative of the log. The end could also be unrepresentively wetter than the middle if it was recently rained on or otherwise subject to high humidity. I suppose I might choose which stack to draw from next based upon log-end measurements in the piles, then if I had concerns, cut a log in half so that I could get a measurement the center for confirmation. For firewood stored outside for airtight stoves in humid climates, the range of interest for water content is (say) 10 to 30 percent. It would be helpful if the chirps' rate, slow-to-rapid, could apply to a smaller range of readings to allow the user to better discriminate without consulting the display. This could perhaps be achieved (say) by using pitch to indicate range and rate to indicate the reading within that range. Inside the house, the logs continue drying for a time, so the meter is helpful choosing which logs and how many to bring in (perhaps fewer logs need grace the living room than if logs are chosen at random). When it comes to fueling the stove, the meter is helpful to choose which logs to pull next from the rack. Checking of the ends, and heft relative to the log size, serve to confirm the choice.

Really happy that I ordered this!
We recently had a pipe burst in our crawl space. Since we don't ever go into the crawl space, we didn't discover it until I noticed water on the hardwood floors in the powder room. I don't know how long it had been spewing hot water.. I called a plumber to fix the leak, and then a restoration company to remove all of the soaked insulation, etc. Some of the hardwoods were cupped or buckled, and I noticed that the contractors used a tool to measure moisture levels all around the affected areas. I thought it was a good thing to be able to check moisture levels around our home, so I decided to see if I could find a similar tool on Amazon. I found the Accumaster Duo Pro. I didn't know if it was the same model they had used, but it looked just like it, so I ordered it. I think it arrived the next day, which was yesterday (Friday). My husband works out of town during the week and returns home each weekend and I was excited to show him the new tool I had ordered. We were scheduled to make a 6 hour drive to buy a previously owned boat today, and he thought we should bring this tool. We are so thankful that we did. The condition of the boat wasn't as good as advertised, but the definitive factor in our decision that it wouldn't be a wise investment was the moisture that this tool detected in the transom. We checked it on different surfaces to assure ourselves that the readings were accurate - and it seemed that they were. It was worth the purchase for that alone, but now we have a tool that we plan to use to keep on top of moisture and mold problems in our home and our kids' homes, too. We hope that we will use it reguarly and that it continues to be as useful as it was today for a long time to come!

Sensor Pad innaccurate
This seemed to be a great product, but I was not aware at first that the sensor pad was defective. When an engineer did readings around my window with his own meter he pointed out the sensor pad readings on the AccuMaster were wildly inaccurate. If the moisture were really 80% – 99%, the drywall would have to be dripping wet. Readings with pins seem to be fine. It was too late to do a return through Amazon so I contacted the company, but ultimately they couldn't do anything to fix it. UPDATE: The vendor, Calculated Industries, sent me a replacement meter so have revised my rating from 1 star to 4. I have to take 1 star off as the customer service was somewhat lacking. I had originally exchanged 15 emails over 2 months and then heard nothing more. I even asked about a warranty. I then contacted Amazon customer service who referred me back to the company again, as the window for a return was closed, but there is a 1-year warranty. It was only after a formal letter to Calculated Industries that I was mailed a replacement. I was skeptical that it could just be anther dud, but the difference in readings with the senor pad was dramatic. So, finally, I have what appears to be a fine product.

Pin and Pad readings are useful in combination
The Pin and Pad readings on timber were pretty much as I would have expected. So I'd say they were useful & reliable particularly if the question was is it ok for painting or flooring or will it indicate a water/moisture problem. the thinner pins allow you to push the meter into the wood further than stubby pins. The Pin reading for brick/concrete is useful for a surface reading. The Pad reading takes some getting used to as it is a "relative" reading and tends to be highish (that's normal), eg. on brick that I regarded as slightly cool to the touch but ok for painting or rendering I recorded 60 - 75%. Above 75% it may be better to wait for a hot/dry day for painting/rendering. 80+ is probably reasonable to say the material is a bit moist but then you need to determine if it is coming from inside or is it just absorbed from outside after rain.

If you have a water leak, the AccuMAsTER will find it!
We could smell that there was an occasional musty smell coming from our fully finished basement. Try as we might, we couldn't find any evidence of a leak. We decided to order the AccuMASTER. Within minutes of receiving the meter, we were able to test moisture readings throughout the basement and quickly isolated the problem. Once we knew where the leak was, it was easy to fix (and no ripping out the whole basement to find it). While I am not 100% sure that the readings are accurate, they are directional correct and will certainly identify if/where you have a problem; and the meter is very easy to use and to read.

Found humidity in my basement
This machine worked great. I found the high humidity in the basement. I’m so happy of this purchase. I found it by using the pinless technique. Worth it. I didn’t have to hire someone to tell me where the problem is, saved a loooot of $$$.
